Supported Employment client story: Finding a role that turns passion into purpose
Jordan* is a LifeWorks NW client enrolled in the Enhanced Adult Mental Health Services program. When she joined LifeWorks NW, she was unemployed and and hoping to find meaningful work. She was able to able to find that opportunity with the help of our Supported Employment program.
Finding meaning through work
The team at LifeWorks NW helped Jordan find a position as a school Nutrition Specialist, where she learned that working with kids was what she found really exciting. However, she realized she wanted to work with kids outside of the kitchen and in the classroom, instead.
“I applied to a substitute teaching position and was directed towards substitute para educating, which I worked towards as my goal and continue to work in,” says Jordan. “My goal for Supported Employment was to figure out what kind of job would be a good fit, working with children.”
Gaining independence through perseverance
The Supported Employment program helped Jordan gain the independence she was hoping for since the start of her journey.
Jordan says that the process had its challenges, but she learned to persevere. “I felt that I would not have stuck with process as long as I did if it was not for the employment specialists, as well as my family,” she says “I learned to stick with it even though it may look intimidating, difficult, or challenging.”
Jordan was able to explore this new career path further while gaining experience in technology, interviews, and the application and hiring process.
“I feel my future will be different in continuing to gain more independence,” she says. “I will be able to make a positive difference with my students and other staff.”
Looking toward the future
Using the new skills gained in the program, Jordan created what her current and future goals were. “I want to go back to my work in the school in the fall and accept more assignments, picking up my workload,” she says. “I want to keep driving to my shifts myself and continue to do trainings to be better at my job.”
She adds, “If it is something you’re really passionate about, it is worth the hard work.”
