Supported Employment client story: ‘I learned that I am fully capable of maintaining a steady job when I have the right foundation’

Jordan* came to LifeWorks NW’s Supported Employment program after looking for work for nearly three years. Diagnosed with a severe mental illness, Jordan shared with his therapist in the Enhanced Adult Mental Health Services program that he had dreams of building a career.

“I wanted to find a stable job but felt overwhelmed by the application process,” says Jordan. “I wasn’t sure how to handle my anxiety during interviews. The Supported Employment program gave me the structured guidance and personal backing I needed to confidently step into the workforce.”

Jordan began to work with Connor Williams, Supported Employment Specialist. Together, the team took on addressing some of Jordan’s concerns, starting with interviewing skills. “We did mock interviews until he felt more confident in his response to questions,” says Connor.

From there, they built Jordan’s resume and worked on strategies for anxiety management.

“My Employment Specialist was the bridge between my anxiety and my success,” says Jordan. “He broke down the hiring process into manageable steps and checked in constantly to ensure I felt supported. Having someone truly believe in my potential gave me the confidence to stick with it.”

Growing a career and expanding goals

Jordan ultimately found a fulfilling position at a company he loves, where he hopes to continue to grow his skills and his career. “My journey back to work required stepping completely out of my comfort zone,” he says. “Along the way, I learned how to manage my time, stick to a demanding routine, and communicate effectively with my supervisors.”

“Most importantly,” Jordan adds, “I learned that I am fully capable of maintaining a steady job when I have the right foundation.”

His experience in the Supported Employment program gave him more than a new job, it opened the doors to a new set of ambitions. Jordan says, “My goals are to achieve complete financial independence, secure my own apartment, and continue to build skills that ensure long-term career stability.”
