“How important it is for us to recognize and celebrate our heroes and she-roes!”—Maya Angelou

Today, LifeWorks NW honors the commitment and sacrifice of the 19 million veterans who have served, or are serving, in the U.S. military–as well as the family members who made that service possible. For those who answered the call to protect the highest ideals of our nation, you and your families surely represent the best of us. We take the opportunity today to express our deepest gratitude for your dedication and duty. We could not be prouder to know you as a colleague, a friend, a neighbor, or a loved one. Thank you for choosing to serve, or to support those who do; our liberty and freedoms are your legacy.

For those wanting to appreciate a veteran, today or any day, please know it can be very meaningful to have your service recognized. Only 1 percent of the population serves in the military, so it often feels like an isolated experience. And few people truly understand the day-to-day sacrifices made by service members and their families. So rather than just thanking someone for their service, invite them to share more about it, including what inspired them to join. Everyone’s service is unique, but curiosity and respect are universal guides. To me, when I share what I’m most proud of while serving in uniform, and there’s a soldier in me that feels seen no matter what day of the year it is.
