Supported Employment client story: ‘I am stronger than I thought’

Sonia* came to LifeWorks NW’s Supported Employment program to build her financial independence. Sonia’s family lived with her mother-in-law, who helped support them, and Sonia wanted to grow her education and career so she could provide for her family on her own. Diagnosed with Bipolar I disorder, it was also important to her to stabilize her mental health.

“I was a stay-at-home mom, with two neurodivergent kiddos, and I was trying to figure out how to get back into the workforce,” says Sonia. “I really didn't know what my goal was at first because I didn't know what to look for. I wanted to help people, I knew that.”

Sonia worked with her Supported Employment Specialist, Emily Profitt, QMHA, to determine her next steps. Sonia knew her mental health benefitted from routine and structure. While she was interested in opening an Adult Foster Home, she decided to make that a long-term goal while she gained more work experience

Finding her path

“In the past, I was doing caregiving, customer service, and working with people with developmental disabilities. I wanted to do something related to that,” says Sonia. "We ended up creating a goal for me to be a Peer Wellness Specialist so I could help people who were going through their own mental health challenges."

In addition to earning her Peer Wellness credentials, Sonia worked with Supported Employment to revamp her resume and address her anxiety about job applications and interviews. In the end, she found a Peer Wellness Specialist position, and she is now focused on continuing to learn and grow in her role.

Gaining financial independence

“I am able to provide for my family with a dual income now,” says Sonia. “I think a lot of my insecurities have subsided because I am now more independent. I feel like I am on a track and don't feel lost all the time.”

Sonia's experience with the Supported Employment program gave her more than a new career. “I learned that I am stronger than I thought and things all work out like they are supposed to,” says Sonia. “Gaining back my own independence and being able to provide for my family was a huge part of the journey that was significant to me."
