Before and After

Designed to address addiction among African American youth, the REAL program is just that – real. The initials REAL stand for Recovery, Empowerment, Achievement in Life and that is what the program works to achieve with the young clients it serves.

Todd's Letter

Before I started the REAL program I didn’t understand the importance of my responsibilities. I didn’t understand that everything that I do now has an effect on my future.

The first thing I learned and appreciated from REAL is patience. Patience is the key to accomplishing your goals in life. If you don’t have patience, then you’ll always end up mad when things aren’t going your way.

Another thing I learned is how to stay clean and sober. Just say no! When you focus your mind on other things, you’ll forget about getting high. There’s not really much to say about staying clean, because at the end of the day, everyone will do what they want to do and that’s a decision everyone has to make for themselves.

I appreciate my proctor parents for having faith in me and motivating me to do better in life, and my counselors for working with me in a way that doesn’t make me feel like I’m just a client, and my family for continuing to love and support me like I never left home.
